How it all began
John Dvorschak & Michele O'Gorman
For 15 years, I owned and operated a steakhouse. Food was my life. I spent those years cooking for people, building a business, and learning that what goes into the food you make matters. But somewhere along the way, I started cooking for a very different customer. Her name was Jenkins. Jenkins was my dog, and when she was around nine years old, she began having stomach problems. I reached a point where I wasn’t comfortable simply putting another bowl of commercial dog food in front of her and hoping for the best. So I did what I knew how to do. I started cooking. I made her meals myself. I learned what she liked, paid attention to what agreed with her, and started making her treats too. I wanted to know what I was putting in her bowl. What started because I was worried about my dog became something I loved doing for her. Jenkins stayed by my side until she was 16 years old. I would never claim that my cooking was the reason she lived that long. I was simply grateful for every extra year I got with her. But caring for her changed the way I thought about what we feed the animals who depend on us. There’s another part to this story. Michele and I met in high school. We dated for 4 years, life took us in difference directions, and 31 years later we found each other again. And of course she was a dog person too! Her girl was Bella. Bella has since passed as well, but just like Jenkins, she left behind the kind of memories that don’t disappear when they’re gone. And that’s really where Fur the Love of Pups comes from. It’s not something we dreamed up in a conference room. It’s not a big pet-food company trying to invent a cute story for a package. It’s two people who love dogs, who have loved and lost some incredible ones, starting a new chapter together. I spent the last 15 years of my career cooking for people. I'd like to spend the next 15 making something special for dogs! We’re starting small. We’re making our treats ourselves, using simple ingredients we recognize, developing our own recipes, and putting the same care into them that I once put into cooking for Jenkins. I’m sure Jenkins and Bella would have been more than happy to volunteer as our official taste testers. But every bag we make will have a little bit of their story behind it.
